From The Original Montessori for Dementia Training by Dr. Cameron Camp, this is the Montessori Dementia Care Professional Course.

 

Montessori Inspired Lifestyle®: Montessori Based Dementia Programming® (MIL:MBDP) is an innovative method of working with older adults living with cognitive and/or physical impairments based on the method and philosophy of famed educator Maria Montessori. Montessori-based approaches to dementia care have been researched for over 20 years by Dr. Cameron Camp and his colleagues. It has been shown to increase levels of engagement and participation in activities of persons with dementia.

 

Participants in this course will learn the basic principles of MIL, along with how to adapt this programming to meet the needs of their clients and facilities. This 6-hour introductory course is a required prerequisite for enrolling in advanced MIL courses.

 

 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand underlying causes of responsive behaviors in persons with dementia
  2. Understand the importance of activities in the lives of persons with dementia and those who provide care for them
  3. Describe memory systems as they relate to persons with dementia
  4. Describe abilities that are spared in persons with dementia that can serve as the bases for effective interventions
  5. Describe how the educational method and philosophy of Maria Montessori can be used to enable persons with dementia to participate in meaningful, effective, and engaging activity.
  6. Describe the key principles of Montessori-Based Dementia Programming
  7. Use key principles of Montessori programming to transform current activities to make them more engaging
  8. Assess the ability of persons with dementia to become engaged in activity
  9. Communicate effectively with persons with dementia
  10. Develop effective interventions for challenging behaviors
  11. Create text and visual cueing systems that can be effectively used by persons with dementia
  12. Create individualized activities for persons with dementia based on their interests and background
  13. Create meaningful social roles for persons with dementia
  14. Create environments that support persons with dementia
  15. Show family members and friends how to have better visits with persons with dementia
