Description

In this course, participants will learn how to enable residents with dementia to lead group activities. Key attributes and qualities of potential resident leaders will be described and discussed. Practical examples and videos are used throughout this course to illustrate key Montessori-based practices and principles as they relate to successful group leadership by residents with dementia.

Ideas are presented for reading and discussion activities, interactive trivia-type activities, exercise, and other group activities.  Each module includes practice questions for review. A required final quiz is presented at the end of this course.

Module 1: How Is This Possible?
Content Types:
In this module, Dr. Camp explains the science behind the approach used for training residents with dementia to lead activities.
Module 2: Reading Roundtable
Content Types:
In this module, an engaging activity involving reading and discussion is described and discussed. The activity has been successfully led by persons with dementia in multiple countries.
Module 3: Treevall Word Games
Content Types:
In this module, a game combining bingo, phrase completion and trivia will be described and discussed. Practical examples and tips for enabling residents with dementia to successfully lead the activity are presented.
Module 4: How To Train Activity Leaders
Content Types:
Approaches and techniques for training persons with dementia to lead group activities are discussed in this module.
Module 5: Examples of Other Resident-Led Activities
Content Types:
To include a variety of abilities and interests, this module describes and discusses other group activities that can be led by residents with dementia.
Module 6: Training Tips
Content Types:
Useful tips for training persons with dementia to lead activities are presented in this module, along with international examples to illustrate effective approaches and techniques.
Mandatory Final Quiz
Content Types:
This is the mandatory final course quiz. A passing score is required for credit toward CMDCP re-certification. A score of 80% or better is required to pass. This quiz may be attempted a total of two (2) times.
